Before making her home and career in Washington, DC, Spandorf was educated at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, Austria. However, once she settled in Washington, she became an active participant in the art community. She held memberships in the Washington Press Club and Artist’s Equity Association, as well as the Washington Watercolor Club. She exhibited widely from local venues such as Smithsonian Institution to the Bodley Gallery in New York. She also designed the 1963 U.S. Post Office Christmas stamp.
As a Washington “insider”, Spandorf had the honor of being commissioned by President Johnson to create works for him to present to visiting dignitaries. Among the recipients of these gifts were HRH Princess Margaret and Chung Hee Park, president of South Korea (1961-79).
Spandorf’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution; White House; Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD; and Municipal Museum of Rome, Italy.
