After Fragonard (French, Mid 19th Century)

Girl Pursued by Her Lover

Oil on paper, painted in the round, signed indistinctly.

Frame Diameter: 16”

The young girl, being pursued by her hiding lover, is a direct reference to Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s The Pursuit in his Pursuit of Love series created for Mme. du Barry in the late eighteenth century. The young girl’s outstretched arms, arabesque leg, and flowing skirts are in the same position in each painting. Today, the original work can be found in New York’s Frick Collection.

Wakefield, David. "Fragonard". 1976.
